Illuminating Pre-Finale – Review of “Light Bringer” by Pierce Brown

Salutations, cosmic travellers! Well, we nearly made it!… Today, we were due to conclude our exhilarating voyage through Pierce Brown’s universe with what was originally going to be the final instalment of the Red Rising series, “Light Bringer”, but will now conclude in 2024 with “Red God”. With Light Bringer having only been released on Tuesday this week, I can say that I devoured it, so prepare for a warp-speed journey as we explore this much-anticipated release!

In Light Bringer, we find our protagonists and their fractured society teetering on the edge of a precipice. The choices they make will not only determine their personal fates but the future of the entire solar system. Darrow, Mustang, and the entire cast of characters we’ve grown to love (and sometimes loathe) are pushed to their limits as they grapple with the consequences of their actions and the hard truths of their revolution.

Pierce Brown’s knack for complex characters and richly layered narratives is on full display. He masterfully ties together the threads of his sprawling saga, delivering a read that is satisfying, heart-breaking, and thought-provoking in equal measure.

Brown’s world-building remains a strong point in Light Bringer, his depiction of a society on the brink of change is vivid and impactful. The intense battles, political intrigue, and high-stakes drama that have defined the series are present in full force, making for a truly gripping read.

However, be prepared for an emotional ride. Light Bringer explores the darker corners of its characters and their world, revealing the high cost of revolution and the sacrifices required to bring about change. It’s a hefty read, filled with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Why Should I Read This Book?

Light Bringer is a must-read for anyone invested in the Red Rising series. It offers a deeply satisfying read but (in some ways I will not go into here, sadly) not conclusion to the epic saga, combining thrilling action, intricate plotting, and poignant character arcs. If you’re looking for a finale, you wont find it here, but the book definitely pays off on the series’ themes of revolution, sacrifice, and the quest for equality.

Why Shouldn’t I Read This Book?

If the darker tone and high emotional stakes of the recent books in the series were not to your liking, you might find Light Bringer a challenging read. It’s a weighty read, filled with complex emotions and intense conflict. If you also feel that adding a 7th instalment was an excuse to make a few extra bucks, it may also put you off.

In conclusion, Light Bringer delivers a powerful penultimate book in the Red Rising series, offering a read that’s as complex and thought-provoking as the journey leading up to it. It’s a testament to Pierce Brown’s storytelling prowess, confirming his place amongst the stars in the literary cosmos.

It will be another year before we can finally disembark from this intense journey through the Red Rising series, but in the mean time, I’m excited to chart our course for our next adventure. Which celestial body shall we navigate towards next in our cosmic voyage of literature?
