The Rising of a New Dawn – Review of “Red Rising” by Pierce Brown

Greetings, fellow space explorers! Today, we’re venturing into a new celestial body within the vast cosmos of science fiction literature. With the impending release of what was originally to be the final book in the series (Light Bringer) being released tomorrow (!), we’re setting course for “Red Rising,” the debut novel of Pierce Brown. This action-packed, dystopian sci-fi adventure promises to be a thrilling ride, and is actually one of my favourite sci-fi series to be released in many years, so let’s blast off!

“Red Rising” takes us to a grim future where humanity has colonized the solar system under a color-coded caste system. Our protagonist, Darrow, is a Red, the lowest caste, laboring in the bowels of Mars to make the surface livable for future generations. But when Darrow discovers the elites, the Golds, have been living in luxury on the surface all along, he embarks on a mission of vengeance and justice that changes everything.

Darrow is an engaging protagonist, complex and deeply relatable. He’s a hero born from tragedy, a character molded by loss and fueled by the desire for justice. His evolution from a lowly miner to a leader is thrilling to witness and forms the heart of “Red Rising.”

The world-building in “Red Rising” is exceptional. The stratified society is painted in vivid colors, both literally and metaphorically, with each caste’s role well-defined and reflective of their standing. The political maneuvering, power games, and social commentary that Pierce weaves into his narrative adds depth to the thrilling adventure.

However, “Red Rising” doesn’t shy away from violence and brutality, which are substantial elements of the narrative. Some readers may find the intensity of these scenes off-putting, even as they serve the novel’s themes of power struggle and rebellion.

Why Should I Read This Book?

“Red Rising” offers a thrilling blend of dystopian science fiction and high-stakes adventure. Its social commentary, well-developed characters, and intriguing world-building make it an engaging read for those who enjoy thought-provoking sci-fi. Darrow’s journey from a subterranean miner to a revolutionary leader will grip you from start to finish.

Why Shouldn’t I Read This Book?

If you’re sensitive to violence or prefer lighter, more optimistic reads, the intensity and grim realities of “Red Rising” might be overwhelming. The novel’s exploration of class struggle and rebellion is raw and unflinching, which can make for intense reading at times.

In conclusion, “Red Rising” is a riveting tale of struggle, revenge, and transformation that marries the thrills of sci-fi action with the thoughtfulness of dystopian commentary. It’s a bright star in the constellation of science fiction literature, well worth the exploration for any adventurous reader.

So, as we come to a stop on this thrilling journey, I wonder, which celestial body shall we navigate towards next in our cosmic voyage of literature?
